Do you remember the @auspost Southern Cassowary stamps?
Issued back in 2019, together with the Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) and the Little Penguin (Eudyptula minor), the Southern Cassowary stamps seemed like a great idea to help raise awareness... but we haven`t seen many of them around since. Have you?
Similarly, it`s estimated that there are fewer than 4,600 cassowaries are left in the wild.
Not only are cassowaries magnificent birds, but many rainforest plants depend on them to move about the landscape. Without them, the structure of the rainforest would permanently change.
Learn more about the cassowaries today: www.rainforestrescue.org.au/explore-the-rainforest/save-the-cassowary (link in bio) 💚.

#CritterCorner: The Musky rat-kangaroo (Hypsiprymnodon moschatus) is the smallest kangaroo there is 🦘.
If you are quietly walking through Tropical North Queensland rainforest in the early morning or evening, keep your eyes on the forest floor - this is where you will most likely spot these special little critters.
These tiny `roos are native (and restricted) to the tropical rainforests of the Far North Queensland, occurring from sea level to 1200m.

Today is Earth Day 💚.
And today we want to remind you that forests worldwide support vast ecosystems, with many species completely reliant on them for their survival. Forests are also extremely important to humanity, providing health benefits, income, food, and more. Despite all the benefits forests provide, they have been disappearing at alarming rates for far too long.
The Daintree rainforest contains an almost complete record of the evolution of plant life on Earth and has more ancient families of flowering plants than anywhere else in the world, including the entire Amazon jungle. From a total of 19 primitive flowering plant families on Earth, 12 families are represented in the Daintree region.
Forests are a BIG deal on Earth 💚.
In 2025, @earthdaynetwork celebrates their 55th anniversary of Earth Day. To mark this milestone, they are inviting everyone to support Earth Day’s 2025 theme: OUR POWER, OUR PLANET ✊.

In the modern world, it’s easy to forget the role rainforests still play in supporting and regulating many of the planet’s most critical natural processes, such as rainfall, absorption of carbon dioxide, and combating climate change. These ‘eco-systems services’ are estimated to be worth trillions of dollars per year globally 💰️🌏️.
Plus, rainforests are home to countless unique and irreplaceable species, such as the Southern Cassowary 😍.
If you are lucky enough to live among cassowaries or visit the areas they live, please follow ‘Cassowary Etiquette’ to ensure your safety and the safety of these incredible birds: www.rainforestrescue.org.au/explore-the-rainforest/save-the-cassowary/living-with-cassowaries (link in bio) 💚.

The Daintree Rainforest is both uniquely rich and incredibly diverse. It hosts 12 of the world`s 19 primitive flowering plant families, offering a living museum of evolutionary history. Beyond plants, this ancient rainforest shelters 30% of Australia`s frog, reptile, and marsupial species, 65% of bat and butterfly species, and 18% of bird species.
The Daintree is a national treasure, and we believe it`s our responsibility to protect its unique species and habitats. You can play a vital role in rescuing and restoring rainforests 🌿.

Listed as endangered, it is estimated that only about 4,600 Australian Southern Cassowaries remain in the wild.
Shy by nature, they pose a threat only when defending their nests/chicks, when threatened, or if they’ve become accustomed to being fed by humans. They are in great need of our protection.

Have you heard of Tassel-ferns (Phlegmariurus spp., Lycopodiaceae)?
These ancient epiphytes are the oldest known plants of their kind, with only 13 species in Australia — all classed as threatened.
In November, Paul Donatiu, Project Manager of the Queensland Threatened Plant Network, and Dr. Ashley Field of the Australian Tropical Herbarium — a dedicated expert on Tassel-ferns — hosted an engaging workshop at Rainforest Rescue`s Native Nursery in Cow Bay 🌿.
Tassel-ferns play a critical role in biodiversity, providing habitat and contributing to the ecological balance of rainforests. Unfortunately, these valuable plants are often illegally removed from their natural environment, threatening their survival and potentially introducing diseases that impact the genetic diversity of the remaining ferns.

#ForestFlora: Have you seen the Yellow bridal veil (Phallus multicolor) 🍄👀? Or, perhaps you`ve smelt it 👃🤢?
This #ForestFungi has a a foul-smelling, sticky spore mass known as a gelatinous gleba. This mimics carrion and attracts insects that help disperse the fungi`s spores. The smell is usually described as foetid, like rotting meat - they are, after all, part of the STINKhorn family!
