A 1000 more trees for the emerging Daintree – International Tree Planting Day – March 21 2020
International Tree Planting Day at NightWings 2020
Before the Coronavirus sent us indoors, we were able to get a special planting done in partnership with Daintree Discovery Centre.
With just 12 ardent tree planters we planted a 1000 trees at NightWings! In addition to our friends from the DDC who did a tremendous amount to bring this about we also had some of our regular, WONDERFUL nursery volunteers and some of our regular tree planters…and some newcomers.
Abi Ralph, Daintree Discovery Centre Manager, said, “It’s really wonderful to see that we can have such a profound impact for nature with just a small group of committed people. Working with Rainforest Rescue makes it a pleasure to restore damaged lands and lay the seeds for what will be a robust rainforest again one day.”
It was a beautiful sunny day AND it rained at night, so it was absolutely perfect !
The day before Grant, Rob and Marine set the trees out in a special array, designed to encourage a “natural” forest structure. With the trees already in the holes it made for a really easy planting effort for the participants. We had a good mix of Pioneers, Early Secondary, Late Secondary and Mature Phase Species to create a quick canopy. This is the same system we used for Lot 46 and it works really well.
It was a wonderful day and is an example of what a small group of committed people can achieve. A 1000 more trees for the emerging Daintree!
Big Thank You to everyone who joined in for the day!
