November Community Tree Planting Day

Last month, on the 19th November, we held our final Community Tree Planting Day for the year at Tranquility on the Daintree.

It was another exceptionally hot day and our 17 volunteers put in a mammoth effort to get a record 1200 trees in the ground!

Tahlia Burchill O’Brien welcomed us onto country and introduced us to a new word in her Eastern Kuku Yalanji language – jawun, meaning friend. It was a fitting word to learn, as so many of our dedicated volunteers have been coming to every single community tree planting day, and by now we consider them all to be jawun.

This year at Tranquility on the Daintree we’ve hosted 5 community tree planting days, where volunteers have helped us put over 5000 native rainforest trees in the ground along Ellis Creek! It has been amazing to compare the changes in growth at each event, and to walk back along the Creek to where we planted on our first event in July. The trees are looking strong and healthy after being given the best possible start to life by Land Manager Justin.

As another successful year comes to an end, we would like to thank Maggie and Roger, landowners of Tranquility on the Daintree for allowing us to restore the creek-line of their beautiful property, and our Rainforest Rescue staff for all the hard work they have put in at the nursery, at HQ, and on the land to make this project spring to life!  And of course, thank you to our tireless volunteers for the hours they have put in with muddy boots and trowels in hand to protect, restore and spread awareness about the magnificent, ancient Daintree Rainforest.
