RAINFOREST RESCUE ON INSTAGRAM
Before European settlers arrived, the resource-rich rainforests of the Wet Tropics were one of the most densely populated parts of Australia. They were the only permanently occupied rainforests in Australia because the rainforest provided food, shelter and medicine, as well as spiritual customs and identity 💚.
Aboriginal people sustainably managed the rainforest for thousands of years, and the cassowary was appreciated as a food resource and for its seed dispersal role because it meant an ongoing supply of new fruit from new trees.
The cassowary is culturally significant to the traditional owners of the tropical rainforests. It is integral to their culture, customs and values, appearing in important traditional stories, ceremonies and dances. Involvement of traditional owners in environmental management allows the incorporation of traditional ecological knowledge and ensures the maintenance and continuation of cultural and spiritual practices and education.

#ForestFlora: The King Fern (Angiopteris evecta) is one of the largest and most ancient ferns in the world 🌿.
It looks a little like a palm crown growing directly out of the ground but this is actually a relic fern from the late Paleozoic era.

The low-frequency, booming calls of the Southern Cassowary are at the bottom end of human hearing. At 32 Hertz, they are the lowest known vocalisations of all birds and have been described as ‘strange’ and ‘unsettling’ by people who have heard them. These low-frequency sounds (known as ‘infrasound’) are thought to travel over long distances, even through dense rainforest foliage.

Yesterday was World Science Day for Peace and Development, which highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage more people in debates on emerging scientific issues 🔬🔍💚.
We apply science in all our efforts to help protect the Daintree FOREVER, and we want to help others understand the importance and relevance of science in the daily lives of all of us.
Amongst other scientific projects, we are working with Fred Holden, a research officer at James Cook University, who is helping investigate the carbon dioxide removal through the enhanced weathering of basalt in acidic soils, with experience in soil monitoring and environmental management. To better understand our trees, we need to unearth what is happening in the mysterious world right under our feet.

#CritterCorner: Named after its distinctive white lips, the White-lipped tree frog (Litoria infrafrenata) is Australia’s largest native frog 🐸💚.
The White-lipped tree frog’s colour can vary – some are pure green, some are a greenish shade of brown, and others aren’t so green at all (more of a pale brown). If you’re lucky, during the breeding season, you may spy some that have a salmon-pink colouration down their arms and legs.

Our team collects, propagates and grows all the rainforest trees for our Daintree lowland revegetation ‘Plant a Rainforest’ projects 🌱🌱🌳🌳🌳.
Seeds are ethically collected from the Daintree Lowland Rainforest between the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation and the trees are replanted in the same area.
The original nursery facility, located in Diwan, propagated around 12,000 trees a year. In November 2023, Rainforest Rescue gifted the original Nursery to Eastern Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owners organisation, Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation (JYAC), in support of their propagation and restoration goals to heal country.
The current nursery facility is the Daintree’s largest Native Nursery. It is located at the old Cow Bay Airstrip site, and was only possible thanks to your support. At full operation, this nursery will enable us to produce 150,000 trees per year which is enough trees to replant almost 25 hectares of rainforest habitat every year.

For many people, the evolution of the cassowary is perplexing 🤔. The Southern Cassowary’s three-toed feet, amber eyes, casque, and brightly-coloured neck are evocative of a dinosaur. Southern Cassowaries belong to the taxonomic order Struthioniformes, commonly known as ‘ratites’.
Ratites are morphologically different to other birds. They lack a keel bone, to which flight muscles attach. They also only have small vestigial wings.
Biologists believe that the ratites share a common, flighted ancestor. The ratites may have lost their ability to fly more than once as they evolved and diversified. Flying is the most energy-expensive form of animal movement. Losing the ability to fly allowed the cassowaries to grow much larger than other birds.

#CritterCorner: Those stunning colours! Rose-crowned fruit-doves (Ptilinopus regina) are often heard and less so seen, identified by their calls or the sound of fruit dropping to the ground.
They feed entirely on fruit from vines, shrubs, trees, and palms, and they are thought to be locally nomadic as they follow the ripening of fruits 🐦💚.
Despite their size, they swallow fruit whole and its believed that figs are their favourite treat!

Bees are a vital part of our rainforests and the world, but they are facing an alarming decline 🐝🐝🐝.
Not only are these little critters believed to pollinate approximately 30% of our food crops and 90% of our wild plants, they also provide honey and other products such as beeswax, propolis and honey bee venom.
The prospect of a world without bees is a terrifying one, but, you can help!
💛 Ditch the toxic pesticides and opt for natural alternatives instead (remember, even natural sprays can harm pollinators so make sure to only use them outside of foraging hours)
🖤 Plant bee-friendly flowers and let your garden get a little `messy`. Let those dandelions bloom and give yourself a few days off mowing
💛 Offer a water source such as a pond, trickling fountain or bird bath with rocks (ensure the critters have ways to get out by placing sticks on the edges).
🖤 Set up an insect hotel in your backyard, and if you have children, teach them about the importance of pollinators.
