PROTECT A RAINFOREST

Our ‘Protect a Rainforest’ project focuses on purchasing rainforest blocks for conservation and protecting them forever, increasing connectivity and protecting biodiversity.

Plant a Rainforest (ยฉ Martin Stringer)

PLANT A RAINFOREST

Our โ€˜Plant a Rainforestโ€™ projects replant rainforest and re-establish habitat for plants and animalsโ€™ endemic to that specific ecosystem. We believe Trees Are The Answer.

Do you remember the @auspost Southern Cassowary stamps? โ
โ
Issued back in 2019, together with the Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) and the Little Penguin (Eudyptula minor), the Southern Cassowary stamps seemed like a great idea to help raise awareness... but we haven`t seen many of them around since. Have you?โ
โ
Similarly, it`s estimated that there are fewer than 4,600 cassowaries are left in the wild.โ
โ
Not only are cassowaries magnificent birds, but many rainforest plants depend on them to move about the landscape. Without them, the structure of the rainforest would permanently change. โ

#CritterCorner: The Musky rat-kangaroo (Hypsiprymnodon moschatus) is the smallest kangaroo there is ๐Ÿฆ˜.โ
โ
If you are quietly walking through Tropical North Queensland rainforest in the early morning or evening, keep your eyes on the forest floor - this is where you will most likely spot these special little critters. โ
โ
These tiny `roos are native (and restricted) to the tropical rainforests of the Far North Queensland, occurring from sea level to 1200m.โ

The Daintree Rainforest is both uniquely rich and incredibly diverse. It hosts 12 of the world`s 19 primitive flowering plant families, offering a living museum of evolutionary history. Beyond plants, this ancient rainforest shelters 30% of Australia`s frog, reptile, and marsupial species, 65% of bat and butterfly species, and 18% of bird species. โ€‹โ
โ
The Daintree is a national treasure, and we believe it`s our responsibility to protect its unique species and habitats. You can play a vital role in rescuing and restoring rainforests ๐ŸŒฟ.โ€‹โ

Listed as endangered, it is estimated that only about 4,600 Australian Southern Cassowaries remain in the wild.โ
โ
Shy by nature, they pose a threat only when defending their nests/chicks, when threatened, or if theyโ€™ve become accustomed to being fed by humans. They are in great need of our protection.โ

Have you heard of Tassel-ferns (Phlegmariurus spp., Lycopodiaceae)?

These ancient epiphytes are the oldest known plants of their kind, with only 13 species in Australia โ€” all classed as threatened.โ
โ
In November, Paul Donatiu, Project Manager of the Queensland Threatened Plant Network, and Dr. Ashley Field of the Australian Tropical Herbarium โ€” a dedicated expert on Tassel-ferns โ€” hosted an engaging workshop at Rainforest Rescue`s Native Nursery in Cow Bay ๐ŸŒฟ.โ
โ
Tassel-ferns play a critical role in biodiversity, providing habitat and contributing to the ecological balance of rainforests. Unfortunately, these valuable plants are often illegally removed from their natural environment, threatening their survival and potentially introducing diseases that impact the genetic diversity of the remaining ferns.โ
