Lot 9, Milky Pine Road, Kimberley
Lot 9 Milky Pine Road (RP 739106) is a 1.21 hectare property that was purchased and protected by Rainforest Rescue in September 2012. It is the third property to be incorporated into the Milky Pine Wildlife Refuge.
Lot 9 Milky Pine Road is located south of the Alexandra Range in an area known as Cape Kimberley and adjoins the Daintree National Park/World Heritage Area. Freehold land in the Kimberley area of the Daintree Lowland Rainforest can be developed for rural residential housing as it is not protected by the Cairns Regional Council conservation planning measures. The block is flat and could easily have been developed for housing and settlement.
The property is adjacent to Lot 10 Milky Pine Road and diagonally opposite Lot 7 Milky Pine Road, both owned by Rainforest Rescue. The property is also in very close proximity to the Daintree National Park/World Heritage Area. This further expands upon a wildlife corridor for the endangered southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii) and other vulnerable flora and fauna.
The Qld Government’s Regional Ecosystem Mapping scheme has identified Lot 9 Milky Pine Road as being dominated by remnant vegetation with a biodiversity status classified as 'endangered'. Over 102 species of plants have been recorded on the property and include known species of cassowary food plants such as Normanbya normanbyi, Endiandra microneura (threatened), Endiandra sankeyana and Antirhea tenuiflora. The property has many fan palms (Licuala ramsayi) and black palms (Normanbya normanbyi); both are significant food plants for cassowaries during the food scarce wet season.
The purchase of this property was made possible by generous donations from Rainforest Rescue supporters.
